Mary, the daughter of Mary Queen of Scotland is married at 16 to Francis II of France but widowed at 18. Resisting all pressure to remarry, she returns home to reclaim the Scottish throne. Elizabeth I, the Queen of England, sees Mary as a threat because many English Catholics regard her as their rightful Queen. Mary marries Darnley and has a son, James. When her enemies plot against her, and she fears for her life, Mary seeks help from Elizabeth. While she is in England however her intrigues against Elizabeth are discovered, leaving Elizabeth facing an agonising choice.
