Palaeontologist Mary spends her time collecting fossils for her shop in Lyme Regis which she runs with her mother. One day archaeologist Roderick Murchison visits the shop with his wife Charlotte and wants to learn about Mary’s work. All is not well between him and his wife and when he leaves to go abroad for a few weeks he leaves Charlotte in the care of Mary and relationships become complicated.
