In 19th century St Petersburg, Anna Karenina is the wife of a Russian imperial minister and has a young son. When she meets Count Vronsky, a dashing cavalry officer, at her brother's house, their mutual attraction leads to an affair. This becomes public and creates a huge scandal in the high society in which they move. Anna's husband gives her an ultimatum: either go into exile with Vronsky and lose her son for ever or stay and end her affair. But Anna' passion for Vronsky is overwhelming and takes her onto a tragic path.
